Tyres part 1

1. What is the purpose of the wheel? -To carry the mass of the vehicle, and to handle the forces subjected to the car. 2. Name the material that the wheels can be made off? -Steel or alloy 3. Describe the term offset and why is it important? The distance between the wheel centre line and the car hub. It is important as every vehicle needs the right offset to alloy room for the brakes, hub etc. 4. In the making off the wheel what is the purpose of the safety ridges? -Prevent the tyre moving into the well if a blow out occurs. 5. What angle is the bead seats on the wheel? -15 degrees 6. On the steering hub what is the wheel studs made off and why are they made of this? -Heat treated alloy steel, to handle the pressure put onto the hub. 7. Describe the function of the tire? -Provides a cushion between the wheel/car and the road. 8. When the tire are being made what is the angle of the cords on the cross ply? -30-38 degrees 9. What is the the difference in-construction between cross ply and radial? -Cross ply tyres have a latticed, criss-cross structure with alternate crossing layers. -Radial tyres have cord loops running radially from side to side, with 2 or more layers of crossing ply. 10.What happens to the tire if it is under-inflated and over-inflated? -Under inflated tyres will cause wear to the sides of the tyre, as it will flex too much. Over inflated tyres will cause wear to the centre of the tyre. 11. What are the two ways the tire valve is fixed? -With a nut and washer, or pressed firmly in place. 12. Why should the tire be balanced? -To maximise tread life, and to stop wheel bobble. 13. What is the min depth on a tire? -1.5MM
